The painting is set in the picturesque village of Bougival, about twenty kilometers from Paris, and represents the islet of Croissy which divides the course of the Seine into two branches, connecting via a bridge to a characteristic open-air restaurant. The restaurant, which is located on the left, is set up on a raft moored to the shore and is equipped with some bathing establishments. It is jokingly called Grenouillère, which in French, in addition to meaning "frog pond", also indicates the cheerful chatter of girls gathered to have fun and exchange gossip.

With this work Monet captures with rapid and italic brushstrokes the thrills of that vie moderni of which Charles Baudelaire spoke in 1846.
